Torch Hose Reel

Torch Hose Reel

The Torch Hose Reel is a hose storage and dispensing unit designed to keep a fire hose or flexible hose neatly arranged and ready for use. Its reel structure allows the hose to be wound around a central drum, reducing tangling and helping maintain a clear access area around the installation point.
A typical hose reel consists of a reel drum, frame or mounting plate, hose, inlet connection, valve, and nozzle, with the final configuration depending on the intended application. During operation, the hose can be pulled from the reel while the drum rotates, allowing the operator to reach the required working area without removing the entire hose assembly. After use, the hose can be rewound onto the drum for storage.
For fire protection applications, the hose reel should be selected according to the required hose diameter, length, operating pressure, connection size, and applicable fire-safety standard. Proper installation and periodic inspection are also important to ensure the hose remains accessible and the connections are free from leakage.

How Does a Fire Hose Reel Work?

Water enters the hose reel through the inlet connection and passes through the valve into the hose. When the valve is opened, water flows through the hose toward the nozzle. Pulling the hose causes the reel drum to rotate, allowing the hose to extend from its stored position.

Once the firefighting operation is complete, the hose can be returned to the reel. Manual rewinding keeps the hose organized around the drum and prepares the unit for its next use. The reel should be checked after operation to ensure the hose is correctly rewound and that the valve, nozzle, and connections remain in working condition.

Main Components

Reel Drum

The drum provides the storage surface for the hose and rotates as the hose is pulled out or rewound.

Hose

The hose carries water from the inlet connection to the nozzle. Its diameter, length, material, and pressure rating should match the intended application.

Inlet Connection

Connects the reel to the building's water supply system. The connection size should match the installed piping and valve arrangement.

Control Valve

Controls water flow through the hose. It should be easy to operate and checked regularly for leakage or mechanical problems.

Nozzle

The nozzle directs the water toward the target area. Adjustable nozzle designs can provide different discharge patterns depending on the model.

Mounting Frame

Supports the reel and keeps it securely attached to the wall or designated structure. The fixing points should be suitable for the installation surface.

Where Is a Torch Hose Reel Used?

Building Corridors

A hose reel can be positioned along accessible corridors to provide a fixed firefighting point without storing a loose hose on the floor.

Workshops and Production Areas

It can be installed near suitable combustible-material areas where a connected water supply and hose-based firefighting system are required.

Warehouses and Storage Facilities

The reel can provide organized hose storage near designated access points, allowing the hose to be extended toward the affected area when required.

Commercial Facilities

Suitable for selected commercial buildings where a fixed hose reel forms part of the site's fire protection arrangement.

Installation and Maintenance

  • Choose an accessible position: Install the reel where users can reach it quickly and where the hose can be fully extended without obstruction.
  • Check the water connection: Ensure the inlet connection matches the building's piping system and remains free from leakage.
  • Secure the reel: Use suitable fixing hardware for the wall or supporting structure.
  • Inspect the hose: Check for cuts, cracks, abrasion, deformation, and leakage.
  • Check the valve and nozzle: Operate the control valve and inspect the nozzle for blockage or damage.
  • Test hose deployment: Pull out and rewind the hose periodically to ensure smooth reel movement.
  • Keep the area clear: Do not place equipment or storage materials in front of the reel.

After use, drain or maintain the hose according to the manufacturer's instructions and local fire-safety requirements. Damaged hoses, valves, or nozzles should be replaced or serviced before the unit is returned to service.
